We are seeking to certify individual homes, workplaces, commonly owned properties, and schools which are located within the Weaverville town boundaries. In order to become certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat, our goal is to certify a minimum of 63 homes, 9 workplaces or commonly-owned properties, and 2 schools.
Since 1973, through the Habitats program, the National Wildlife Federation has certified over 100,000 sites including yards, schools, businesses, community gardens and parks, and places of worship. Certifying a site is as simple as providing the for basic habitat components that all wildlife need to thrive: food, water, cover, and places to raise young.
In addition, NWF has certified 31 entire communities, with only one in North Carolina. Weaverville is working to become part of this distinguished group. Weaverville's action plan includes a long-term commitment to citizen education about providing habitat for wildlife and employing sustainable gardening practices such as reducing or eliminating the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, conserving water, landscaping with native plants, removing invasive plants and composting.
